Road Map from Johannesburg to Durban

The road map from Johannesburg to Durban is host to many fascinating places and opportunities. The N3 is the main route from Johannesburg (Jozi) to Durban. It’s a well travelled toll road with five toll plazas at Heidelberg, Villiers, Tugela, Mooi River and Marianhill. It’s a good idea to use cash for the tolls as only specific cards are accepted.

As you drive down the N3 you’ll pass the small town of Heidelberg. You might like to stop off here if you appreciate history and Victorian architecture. Heidelberg is known for its motor museum which was a railway station dating back to 1895. Back on the road you’ll pass the towns of Villiers and Warden. Keep an eye out for the mountains of Lesotho in the distance! Some way down the highway you’ll reach Harrismith, the halfway point between Johannesburg and Durban.

The road map from Johannesburg to Durban offers a number of routes into the majestic Drakensberg mountains from Harrismith onwards. If it’s your first visit to South Africa (or KwaZulu Natal), a few days in the Berg is a must-do! For the adventurous there is incredible rock climbing, abseiling, and horseriding. For those who want to relax and absorb the beauty of the Berg there is a vast range of holiday accommodation to choose from. Most resorts offer a plethora of entertainment and sports activities. Each venue has something special, whether it be a leafy golf course at the foot of the mountain; an aqua pool with a striking view or a sparkling lake complete with rowboats.

Further down the N3 you’ll pass Ladysmith on the left. Ladysmith and surrounds is rich in the history of the Anglo Boer War. If you’re a military history enthusiast, you might like to spend a while visiting the Siege Museum and doing a military history tour. A great place to stop for a break is the Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve. It’s the location of one of the fierce battles between the British and the Boers, and a lovely venue to enjoy a picnic. You can also treat yourself to both watersports and game viewing in the same reserve.

Estcourt is another gateway into the Drakensberg and offers access to the Thukela Biosphere (formerly the Tugela Game Reserve). There are a number of wonderful nature reserves for game viewing, walking, hiking and bird watching. An exposed fossil bed visible from the Wagendrift Nature Reserve calls to those interested in archaeology and natural history. The fossil bed dates back to the Iron Age.

From Mooi River to Hilton (the Natal Midlands) is a glorious drive if you turn off the N3 and onto the Midlands Meander (R103). The Midlands Meander is a fantastic write-your-own-adventure. Plan to spend a couple of days enjoying unhurried drives, feasting on hearty, mouth-watering meals, and discovering the many delightful shops, local crafters and wonderful accommodations on offer.

Have a look at your road map from Johannesburg to Durban to organise your last few visits before you reach your final destination. Tour Pietermaritzburg (the capital of KwaZulu Natal) and appreciate its architecture and history. On your way down the freeway stop off in Botha’s Hill at The View for a meal with an outlook over the Valley of a Thousand Hills. From there, it’s only half an hour to Durban and the beach.
